Suicide Action Plan
At Cask & Barrel we understand the impacts of suicide are immediate, far-reaching and long-lasting. They are felt by families, friends, work colleagues and the broader community, who may struggle to support a person experiencing suicidal behaviour or to cope with the aftermath of a suicide.
How can you help someone who is expressing suicidal thoughts?
- Let them know you are concerned.
- Listen as non-judgmentally as you can.
- Ask if they are feeling suicidal.
- Ask if they have an active plan – this being, they have a plan to take their life and have the means to do it.
- Ask them to remove anything in the house that they might use to impulsively harm themselves.
- Tell them that there are other options than suicide.
- Assist them to identify an informal support that can be with them so they are not alone.
- Don’t agree to keep their suicidal thoughts or plans a secret.
- Encourage them to seek help.
- Make sure their informal support network is aware.
- Encourage them to talk to their GP or mental health professional.
- If you are concerned that they will act on these thoughts and have no safety measures in place call MHERL or 000.
